I've previously shared albums by both German electronic music pioneer Conrad Schnitzler and his frequent collaborator from this period, former DDR resident Jorg Thomasius. This 3-way split release pulls in dark ambient composer and associate Lars Stroschen (better known for his work under the moniker Propellor Island), who initiates the proceedings with a blast of frosty isolationist ambience and follows it up with an inversion into maximalist complexity with a writhing mangle of processed rhythms. Schnitzler's contributions here are very much in keeping with the approach of his other releases from this period, with swarms of zinging and pinging sonic hailstones whizzing around thickly churning sonic wedges while chrome-plated rhythms irregularly judder. As for Thomasius, his contributions here are rife with tension, with thickly effected and cavernously churning environments vaguely reminiscent of Mechthild Von Leusch, but which also unexpectedly (and briefly) explode into full art rock territory in the mode
Conrad Schnitzler (b. Düsseldorf, 1937) is a prolific German experimental musician. Schnitzler has been a major, though reclusive, figure on the European music scene since the late 1960s.[citation needed] Schnitzler was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. He left Kluster in 1971, first working with his group Eruption and then focusing on solo works. He continued to record from his home studio in Dallgow, Germany, creating CD-Rs which he sells independently. Schnitzler has also participated in several collaborations with other electronic musicians. He recorded Acon (2001), a somewhat abstract piece, with former bandmate Hans-Joachim Roedelius. His album with American electronic composer Michael Thomas Roe, Mi.T.-CON 04 (2005), has been compared[weasel words] to his earlier works such as Con/Ballet Statique and Con 3. The Norwegian Black metal band Mayhem has a Schnitzler composition, "Silvester Anfang," on their debut EP, Deathcrush
Lars Stroschen, born 1961 in Berlin. He studied Visual Communications in Berlin Academy of Arts 1981-1987 and worked as a photographer and graphic designer in the meantime. He has a long history of musical training starting from childhood and he was working with electronic music from early 1980's. 1986 he named his studio Propeller Island and begun to use it as his artist pseudonym. 1994 Lars set up Off Scale label to distribute his own albums. In 1997 he opened a four room Propeller Island City Lodge hotel to finance his musical aspirations. By 2005 Propeller Island City Lodge hotel has expanded to cover over 30 individually decorated thematic rooms. Lars has also produced cd's of sound effects and samples.
