Wim Mertens - Struggle for pleasure - 1983

Wim Mertens - Struggle for pleasure - 1983
Minimalist - MP3 320 kbps - 47MB

1 Tourtour
2 Struggle for Pleasure
3 Salernes
4 Close Cover
5 Bresque
6 Gentleman of Leisure

The fourth release by Belgian post-minimalist composer Wim Mertens, 1983's Struggle for Pleasure, is a brief EP's worth of, as the composer puts it, "petite musique de chambre." It sounds a bit stuffy, but it's indicative of Mertens' talent that one of these six tracks, the hauntingly beautiful piano instrumental "Close Cover," actually became a hit on the continent when it was released as a single. Although "Close Cover" is the clear highlight of Struggle for Pleasure, the other five tracks are beautifully arranged pieces of modern chamber music. Although Mertens is clearly heavily influencedmore… by American minimalist composers — the title track and "Gentleman of Leisure" are unalloyed Philip Glass homages — he brings his own brilliant compositional sense and a genuine gift for unexpected arrangements to these pieces. The opening "Tourtour," for soprano saxophone and harp, brings entirely unexpected textures out of both instruments, and "Salernes" keeps from sounding too much like early Terry Riley through the unexpected start-stop motif that reappears throughout the piece. Mertens, who began composing and recording at the age of 28, has the melodic sensibility of someone who grew up not only with the modern classical tradition, but with jazz and pop as well. Indeed, Mertens' piano style on "Close Cover" recalls the fragmented impressionism of Bill Evans. As a result, his music is accessible to more listeners than just the die-hard 20th century classical crowd, making the album title considerably less descriptive than it might otherwise be. Like all of Mertens' early releases, Struggle for Pleasure was originally released under the group name Soft Verdict and reissued under Mertens' own name in the late '80s.

Terry Oldfield - Icon (1995)

Terry Oldfield - Icon (1995)
MP3 | Sacred | VBR | Joint Stereo | 100MB

Terry Oldfield’s Icon is a powerful testimony of spiritual strength, blending the ethereal beauty of sacred monastic chants reminiscent of the Christian Middle Ages with the energy of a near Native American pulsating rhythm. The soaring flight of a solo flute provides a trance-like introduction, and a rich variety of instruments, including pan-pipes and acoustic guitar..

VERTIGES
by Robert Briatte

In the kingdom of everyday fantasy, the headless queen sets our heart in a whirl. This is what Vertiges, the new album by Henry Torgue and Serge Houppin, with its attractive and mysterious sleeve, shows us from the very outset.

A red flower blooming in an urban greyness, a modern lady-in-waiting trapped in concrete, or a puppet, seduced and abandoned there by some vague worshipper?
The reply to the torments of this dervish in a scarlet dress, with enticing legs calling out to those wonderful clouds for help, can be heard in these pieces of music.

It is a music that is full of many other images, pushing its inclination for dizzying heights to the upper reaches of the sky. Dance, or rather a series of dances, the fourteen pieces in this collection pays tribute to the ballet or the staging that inspired them.

This music should be heard loud, very loud, to the point of feeling dizzy.

Life and work of Wim Mertens

Mertens studied social and political science at the University of Leuven (graduating in 1975) and musicology at Ghent University; he also studied music theory and piano at the Royal Conservatories of Ghent and Brussels.
In 1978, he became a producer at the then BRT (Belgian Radio and Television, now called Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep). For Radio 2 (Radio Brabant) he produced concerts by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Meredith Monk, Urban Sax, and others, and hosted a program called Funky Town together with Gust De Meyer (with whom he recorded the experimental CD For Amusement Only).
Known primarily as a composer since the late 1970s, Mertens is best known for his opus "Struggle for Pleasure". He is also well known for his piece "Maximizing the Audience", which was composed for Jan Fabre's play The Power of Theatrical Madness, which premiered in 1984 in Venice, Italy.
Mertens' style has continually evolved during the course of his prolific career, starting from downright experimental and avant-garde, always gravitating around minimalism, usually, however, preserving a melodic foundation to the forays that he makes into the worlds that he is exploring. His compositional quality has often overweighted the "labelling issue" and reached wider audiences although stemming from a far-from-mainstream musical context (see section In Popular Culture).
Mertens' music was used in the 1987 Peter Greenaway film The Belly of an Architect, along with that of Glenn Branca as well as in the Dutch-British film Shadow Man (1988), directed by Piotr Andrejew.
Mertens is the author of American Minimal Music[1], which looks at the school of American repetitive music.
In March 1998 Mertens became the Cultural Ambassador of Flanders.
In August 2007 Mertens signed a contract with EMI Classics for his entire catalog[2]. The label has prepared an ambitious re-release plan of his back-catalog which will start in January 2008. His "oeuvre intégrale" will be made available digitally and worldwide. But first EMI Music Belgium released Mertens' newest (51st) 9-track album Receptacle on September 24. For this album Mertens decided to work with an orchestra consisting of only women, 17 in total. It is not the first time that Mertens has worked together with EMI. Already in 1999 Mertens released the soundtrack to the Paul Cox film Father Damian via EMI Classics.
