The MN Records catalogue is significantly enriched with a second set of CDs to add to the 6 released in 2005. Two major albums are released on 24 July featuring Nyman's non-operatic vocal music:
Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi and Acts of Beauty/Exit no Exit are new recordings that present compelling examples of Nyman's vibrant approach to word-setting, song structure and subject matter.
Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi couples two of Michael Nyman's major vocal pieces of 1991 and 2001 and two favoured singers of the composer, Hilary Summers and Sarah Leonard.
Six Celan Songs is Michael Nyman's most profound song cycle, composed in 1990 for Ute Lemper.
Nyman selected six of Paul Celan's less hermetic texts, accidentally, perhaps, all featuring flower symbolism in a kind of 'negative theology', representing Celan's attempt as a poet to come to terms with the impossibility, according to Adorno, of writing poetry 'after Auschwitz'.
The songs, individually and collectively, express both the horror, the emptiness of the writer in exile and are cast in a musical language which attempts to 'reinvent' an imaginary emotional world related to the Romanian background in 1920s Bukovina, where Celan was born.
The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi, unlike the Six Celan Songs, deals directly with a war situation – an 18-month- old Kosovan boy left for dead during the Kosovo war, found and re-named by the Serbs and 6 months later reunited with his parents. It is the most recent in Nyman's series of collaborations with visual artists, in this case the American feminist/conceptualist Mary Kelly. Kelly provided the composer with a complex text in a simple ballad form which Nyman brilliantly subverts in his continuous 18-minute piece, written for Sarah Leonard and the Nyman Quartet and first performed surrounded by Kelly's visual representation of the text in the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2001.

Time Will Pronounce: The 1992 Commissions is a 1993 album by Michael Nyman, his eighteenth release. Nyman does not actually perform on the album, but he composed all the music, produced it, and wrote the liner notes. The album contains four tracks, each track a different work. The album is dedicated to the memory of Tony Simons, "friend, manager, and generous and courageous survivor." The album is named for the second and longest of the four works, the only one featuring a former member of the Michael Nyman Band, Elisabeth Perry.

Ravenous is the score for the film of the same name. It was written and performed by Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman (by agreement, Albarn credited first on the album and Nyman credited first on the film credits). The score was actually not a collaboration, according to Nyman: "Ravenous was a joint composition in the sense that Damon Albarn composed 60% of the tracks, and I did the rest." [1] It features Nyman's first writing for banjo since his 1981 self-titled album.
The tracks known to be composed/arranged by Nyman include:
* Hail Columbia & Noises Off (actually pre-existing arrangements) and Welcome To Fort Spencer. These were written for and performed by Foster's Social Orchestra, a group of non-musician artists Nyman assembled under the inspiration of the Portsmouth Sinfonia.[2]
* Cannibal Fantasy (on the Ravenous DVD commentary, Albarn attributes Cannibal Fantasy to Nyman).
In addition, the tracks most recognizably in Nyman's (more classical) idiom include:

Subject matter ranges from beautiful buttocks to the weight of the penis. The instrumental Exit No Exit features Andrew Sparling (clarinet) with the Nyman Quartet. No sax, but plenty of violins.

Working alongside director Laurence Dunmore, Michael Nyman has composed the music for his latest film, The Libertine.
The film is a version of the celebrated Stephen Jeffreys play. It tells the story of the 17th century Earl of Rochester (Johnny Depp), his friendship with King Charles II (John Malkovich) and his affair with actress Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton). For Nyman, there?s a direct link back to his first major soundtrack The Draughtsman?s Contract, another 17th-Century based comedy of manners.
Once again the composer and his long-standing band deliver a stunning score, rich in detail, with driving, baroque-influenced tunes counter-balanced by a series of haunting, elegiac melodies.
Performed by The Michael Nyman Band, The Libertine ? Original Soundtrack CD is available now on MN Records, the composer's own label, launched in January 2005.

Carrington is the first soundtrack that I have written which, because of the nature and layout of the film, has been designed (on one level) to illuminate character -that of Dora Carrington, and of the men with whom she is shown to have relationships. For instance, her relationship with Lytton Strachey is represented (at Christopher Hampton's request) by material derived from my String Quartet No. 3 (tracks 1, 2, 5, 9, 18); Mark Gertler is 'portrayed' by track 7, Talph Partridge (briefly) by track 10, Gerald Brenan by track 12, and 'Beacus' Penrose by track 13.

If you're unfamiliar with Nyman and want a broad overview of his best work, I'd start here.I played it over and over-- Nyman's almost creepily insistent and precise compositions will appeal to those who appreciate minimalism and repetition in the music of other composers such as John Adams, Steve Reich, Michael Torke, and Philip Glass.Ten years later, Nyman is recognised as one of the biggest composers of late XXth century. In part with the astonishing soundtrack of "The Piano". But I think this "Essential" album has more to offer to you.The Essential Michael Nyman Band collects some of the music Michael Nyman has composed for the films of director Peter Greenaway. One might consider this collection to be a "Best of Nyman/Greenaway." Nyman's music is an essential element of Greenaway's films, as the director usually shoots his film to the music after it has been composed and recorded. Greenaway's films are known to be surreal, manipulative endeavors, and the Nyman compositions on this album are no different. There's an off-kilter intensity to much of the goings-on, and Nyman's band always sounds commited to achieving the final, epic vision. The selected compositions are all quite superb, showcasing meditative pieces with all-out classical attacks worthy of a disturbed techno artist.
