Styles: Electronic, Jazz-Lounge, Jazz-Groove, Downbeat, Jazz-House

The hottest selling chillout compilation series in South Africa is Café d'Afrique, solidly outperforming such genre stars as Buddha Bar and Hotel Costes. Featuring a fantastic mix of South African and international artists, the album is adventure deep into the heart of downtempo music and stunning female pop vocal tracks.

VOLUME 1
Original Release Date: March 28, 2006
Quality/Bitrate: MP3 / 320 kbit/s / 44.1 Khz / Stereo
Total Time: 70:48 Min

Subtitled and themed "chilled beats from the Cape of Good Hope,' this is the third wondrously infectious volume in an exciting series of introductions to the music of the South African and European dance scenes. Although the primary purpose of this 13-track collection is to expose the uninitiated to the stunning mix of cool grooves, ambience and trippy adventure inherent in both cultures, the album also boasts a big star, which certainly boosts its commercial prospects. The sparsely arranged, easy thumping soul track "Your Love Is Mine" (credited to New Mastersounds) was written and sung by a then-unknown Corinne Bailey Rae, who was a member of that group. South African born compilation producer Andrew Mitchley was so enamored of the track that he included two versions, the original gospel inflected take and the thicker groove-driven "Fred Everything Mix." Rae's soothing, jazzy inflections vibe perfectly with the rest of the material here from artists like Prime Circle (whose lead singer is a passionate and soulful Sting influenced artist), Goldfish, Mint Royale (who adds strings and chill ambience), Samantha James (whose sound is best described as "low-key disco") and the swinging Euro-jazz group JoJo Effect, which does a fascinating lounge version of "The Beat Goes On." ~ Review by Jonathan Widran ~

Philip Glass - Dracula - OST - 1999

Philip Glass - Dracula - OST - 1999
Soundtrack - MP3 VBR - 280MB

It's no surprise that some of Philip Glass's most inspiring projects have been multimedia. The composer's minimalist tendencies lend themselves to the accompaniment of vast landscapes, silent films, and--now--Tod Browning's 1931 horror classic, Dracula. With longstanding collaborators the Kronos Quartet performing the score, Glass has created a soundtrack that moves with rapid-fire momentum and a timeless chamber-music feel. Dracula never sounds sinister or ironic, just ominous--the perfect companion to a film with plenty of dialogue but no pre-existing score. So what if we've already heard Glass's stylistic trademarks--striking arpeggios, repeated motifs, and the like--on any number of albums (for example, the Kronos/Glass soundtrack to Mishima or Uakti's 1999 release, Aguas de Amazonia)? Unlike the epic three and a half hours of Music in Twelve Parts, this enjoyable disc takes just over an hour and it's well worth hearing. In the new video release of Dracula, accompanied by Glass's score, you'll never see Bela Lugosi's mug the same way again. --Jason Verlinde

Wim Mertens - Struggle for pleasure - 1983

Wim Mertens - Struggle for pleasure - 1983
Minimalist - MP3 320 kbps - 47MB

1 Tourtour
2 Struggle for Pleasure
3 Salernes
4 Close Cover
5 Bresque
6 Gentleman of Leisure

The fourth release by Belgian post-minimalist composer Wim Mertens, 1983's Struggle for Pleasure, is a brief EP's worth of, as the composer puts it, "petite musique de chambre." It sounds a bit stuffy, but it's indicative of Mertens' talent that one of these six tracks, the hauntingly beautiful piano instrumental "Close Cover," actually became a hit on the continent when it was released as a single. Although "Close Cover" is the clear highlight of Struggle for Pleasure, the other five tracks are beautifully arranged pieces of modern chamber music. Although Mertens is clearly heavily influencedmore… by American minimalist composers — the title track and "Gentleman of Leisure" are unalloyed Philip Glass homages — he brings his own brilliant compositional sense and a genuine gift for unexpected arrangements to these pieces. The opening "Tourtour," for soprano saxophone and harp, brings entirely unexpected textures out of both instruments, and "Salernes" keeps from sounding too much like early Terry Riley through the unexpected start-stop motif that reappears throughout the piece. Mertens, who began composing and recording at the age of 28, has the melodic sensibility of someone who grew up not only with the modern classical tradition, but with jazz and pop as well. Indeed, Mertens' piano style on "Close Cover" recalls the fragmented impressionism of Bill Evans. As a result, his music is accessible to more listeners than just the die-hard 20th century classical crowd, making the album title considerably less descriptive than it might otherwise be. Like all of Mertens' early releases, Struggle for Pleasure was originally released under the group name Soft Verdict and reissued under Mertens' own name in the late '80s.

Terry Oldfield’s Icon is a powerful testimony of spiritual strength, blending the ethereal beauty of sacred monastic chants reminiscent of the Christian Middle Ages with the energy of a near Native American pulsating rhythm. The soaring flight of a solo flute provides a trance-like introduction, and a rich variety of instruments, including pan-pipes and acoustic guitar..

1999 debut for Europop artist. 12 classical influenced tracks including 'De L'Abime Au Rivage...' and 'Spente Le Stelle' plus 3 bonus tracks 'Dolce Veneno', 'Fera Ventura' and 'Discovering Yourself'. Standard jewel case.

Emma Shapplin started her music career in classical music but then moved to hard rock. When she was 18, singer Jean-Patrick Capdevielle convinced her to to return to taking classical lessons so as to improve her singing technique. She discovered that although rock had given her more artistic freedom and hedonistic lifestyle than classical music, it was still not enough for her, so she decided to create her own style.[3] This became a combination of archaic opera and modern trance and folk traditional scottish and/or pop music. Shapplin and Capdevielle subsequently worked together on her first release, Carmine Meo. Capdevielle wrote Carmine Meo as the first part of an Atlantis themed opera, Atylantos, whose 2001 staging and CD release promoted the careers of four other gifted young singers: the French sopranos Chiara Zeffirelli and Jade Laura D’angelis, the Romanian soprano Elena Cojocaru, and the French tenor Nikola Todoravitch.
Although Shapplin was raised speaking French, and sings some of her songs in that language, most of the songs on Carmine Meo were translated from the French in which Capdevielle wrote them into Latin and ancient Provençal dialect, in which Shapplin sang them.[6] On her second release, Etterna, she decided to perform in old (13th-century) Italian. She did so because, according to her, "It's a language that sings naturally"; and because this is closer to the modern Italian language she used in some of her first classical singing lessons, while the older Italian "lends itself more to poetry, to dreaming, and to drama too". In particular, she used the spelling "Etterna" for the album and track title because this is the way Dante wrote, rather than the modern Italian "Eterna". She occasionally performs one of her hit songs, La Notte Etterna, in Spanish (as La Noche Eterna). Her single "Discovering Yourself" is in English.
Shapplin was relatively unknown in the United States until composer Graeme Revell used her voice on his score for the movie Red Planet. They later collaborated on her second album Etterna, with Revell producing all of her songs. That album was written in breach of her contract with Pendragon Records, which owns the trademark "Emma Shapplin" and had a six-record contract with the singer.

Stabat Mater is a musical setting of the Stabat Mater sequence composed by Arvo Pärt in 1985, a commission of the Alban Berg Foundation. The piece is scored for a trio of singers: soprano, alto, and tenor; and a trio of string instruments violin, viola, and violoncello; it has a duration of approximately 24 minutes. A version with expanded forces (mixed chorus and orchestra) was premiered on June 12, 2008 at the Großen Musikvereinssaal during the Wiener Festwochen 2008 with Kristjan Järvi conducting the Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien and the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. This new version was commissioned by the Tonkünstler-Orchester. Stabat Mater is composed in Pärt's characteristic tintinnabuli style (which he has employed nearly exclusively since 1976) in which arpeggiations of a major or minor triad are combined with ascending or descending diatonic scales.

THE BALLAD OF KASTRIOT REXHEPI – premiere recording
Sarah Leonard soprano
Nyman Quartet
Music composed by Michael Nyman

The MN Records catalogue is significantly enriched with a second set of CDs to add to the 6 released in 2005. Two major albums are released on 24 July featuring Nyman's non-operatic vocal music:

Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi and Acts of Beauty/Exit no Exit are new recordings that present compelling examples of Nyman's vibrant approach to word-setting, song structure and subject matter.

Six Celan Songs/The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi couples two of Michael Nyman's major vocal pieces of 1991 and 2001 and two favoured singers of the composer, Hilary Summers and Sarah Leonard.

Six Celan Songs is Michael Nyman's most profound song cycle, composed in 1990 for Ute Lemper.
Nyman selected six of Paul Celan's less hermetic texts, accidentally, perhaps, all featuring flower symbolism in a kind of 'negative theology', representing Celan's attempt as a poet to come to terms with the impossibility, according to Adorno, of writing poetry 'after Auschwitz'.
The songs, individually and collectively, express both the horror, the emptiness of the writer in exile and are cast in a musical language which attempts to 'reinvent' an imaginary emotional world related to the Romanian background in 1920s Bukovina, where Celan was born.

The Ballad of Kastriot Rexhepi, unlike the Six Celan Songs, deals directly with a war situation – an 18-month- old Kosovan boy left for dead during the Kosovo war, found and re-named by the Serbs and 6 months later reunited with his parents. It is the most recent in Nyman's series of collaborations with visual artists, in this case the American feminist/conceptualist Mary Kelly. Kelly provided the composer with a complex text in a simple ballad form which Nyman brilliantly subverts in his continuous 18-minute piece, written for Sarah Leonard and the Nyman Quartet and first performed surrounded by Kelly's visual representation of the text in the Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2001.

Abdullah Ibrahim - Echoes from Africa

Abdullah Ibrahim - Echoes from Africa
Flac loseless - African Jazz & folk - 145 MB

* Artist: Abdullah Ibrahim
* Rating: StarStarStar
* Styles: African Jazz, African Folk, Post-Bop

Review
This is a rather emotional duet set by pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and bassist Johnny Dyani, two masterful musicians from South Africa. Their often introspective music includes three originals (with one piece dedicated to McCoy Tyner) plus a nearly 17-minute improvisation based on a folk melody that also allows one to hear the voices of the two musicians. This moody music has an almost sacred credibility and is quite personal. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Caetano Emanuel Viana Teles Veloso (born August 7, 1942), better known as Caetano Veloso, is a composer, singer, guitarist, writer, and political activist. He has been called "one of the greatest songwriters of the century"[1] and is sometimes considered to be the Bob Dylan of Brazil.[2] Veloso is most known for his participation in the Brazilian musical movement Tropicalismo which encompassed theatre, poetry and music in the 1960s, at the beginning of the Brazilian military dictatorship.

Veloso was born in Bahia, a state in the northeastern area of Brazil, but moved to Rio de Janeiro as a college student in the mid-1960s. Soon after the move, Veloso won a music contest and was signed to his first label. He became one of the founders of Tropicalismo with a group of several other musicians and artists—including his sister Maria Bethânia—in the same period. However the Brazilian government at the time viewed Veloso's music and political action as threatening, and he was arrested, along with fellow musician Gilberto Gil, in 1969. The two eventually were exiled from Brazil, and went to London, where they lived for two years. After he moved back to his home country, in 1972, Veloso once again began recording and performing, becoming popular outside of Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. He has so far won five Latin Grammy Awards. He recorded his first all-English album, A Foreign Sound in 2004. The album contains many American standards.

14. [Untitled Hidden Track]

This 2005 release finds Jovanotti in good form after the slightly disappointing Il Quinto Mondo. Buon Sangue's great moments recall the laid-back, sunny approach of Capo Horn, as in "Voglia di Libertà" and "La Valigia," or in the hidden bonus track that gives the record its title, a throwback to Jovanotti's trademark melodic hip-hop. As usual with Jovanotti's records, however, the best three tracks are placed right at the beginning of the album, the funky opening "Tanto" and the hypnotic, sensitive love songs "Per Me" and "Mi Fido di Te" -- the latter being the one absolute classic that all Jovanotti albums seem to feature. After this powerful opening salvo, the album enters a slump of funk raves that render seven out of the ten remaining tracks all but virtually undistinguishable. Buon Sangue is indeed the most funk-oriented album of Jovanotti's career, boasting tight arrangements and performances from a great groove band -- but the songs that really stand out are the ones that deviate from the pattern. Another number one record in Italy for Jovanotti, Buon Sangue is a good, solid effort, if not particularly memorable. ~ Mariano Prunes, All Music Guide
